What to Consider with Revision Breast Surgery

There are multiple reasons to consider a Revision Breast Surgery, but most importantly because the patient is not happy with the original breast surgery results. In addition, having a procedure is an important concern for many patients, and at times, it may seem a bit unsettling.

While you gather information before opting for the surgery, you should be well informed about what happens once the implants come out. At Farber Plastic Surgery, Dr. Scott Farber wants all patients to be comfortable with their revision breast surgery decisions and options.

Revision Breast Surgery Explained

A revision breast surgery changes the cosmetic or physical problems with the original surgery. For example, most women want their breasts more prominent than the surgery gave them. Fewer feel the implants are too large. Sometimes scar tissue surrounding the implants needs to be modified. Whatever the reason you are considering a revision, it’s best to seek the services of an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Scott Farber who has extensive experience with breast augmentation surgery and revisions.

Why Get a Revision Breast Surgery?

There are several experiences that lead women to consider revision breast surgery. Some of these include the following issues.

Capsular Contraction

Scar tissue may form around your breast implants. Although a normal healing component, problems arise if the scar tissue becomes rigid and thick. This development of scar tissue is known as capsular contracture. It occurs in the first few months after surgery, but more commonly, it happens years later.

Capsular contracture makes breasts look and feel hard. Severe capsular contracture could result in one or both breasts becoming deformed, causing extreme discomfort. Removing the original implants along with adjacent scar tissue will resolve the problem. Then it’s just a question of what to do next: replace the implants, don’t replace them, or a breast lift.

Adding some soft tissue support could help minimize the risk of capsular contraction from occurring again.

Rupture or Leak

All breast implants will eventually succumb to wear and tear. For example, a small fold in an implant may rub together for years, causing friction and a small hole. Then the core material, either silicone or saline, will leak. With saline implants, the saline is absorbed by the body. As a result, the breast implant loses its volume and deflates noticeably.

Silicone implants are different. A leak in a silicone implant could go undetected for weeks, months, or years. Because of the viscosity of the silicone core, the implant will not deflate, flatten, or show any signs of rupture. Sometimes the problem is visible only on a mammogram. Whatever the implant, when a break takes place, a revision is necessary.

Implant Malposition

Sometimes there’s an imbalance between the implant and breast tissue. This may result in the implants settling too low or too close to each other. As with capsular contracture, these issues may require a complex revision. Again, these procedures should be done by a board-certified plastic surgeon experienced with breast surgery, like Dr. Farber.

Patient No Longer Wants Breast Implants

Commonly, we see women finished with having implants. They’ve had them placed twenty or thirty years before deciding on a change. Factors like age and a lifestyle change have many women disregarding implants and not replacing them, opting for a breast lift instead.
