Male Breast Reduction in Southeast Florida (Gynecomastia)
Gynecomastia, or male breast development, is a very common condition. It is estimated that more than half of teen boys and men will experience some form of the condition during their lifetime. It may be common, but that doesn’t make gynecomastia any less embarrassing. Many of our male breast reduction patients avoided pool parties and beach trips prior to their surgeries, a difficult task when living in perpetually sunny Florida.

What Causes Gynecomastia?
Breast development in males can have many causes. One of the most common is a hormone imbalance. Estrogen is the female sex hormone. Men have some estrogen, but much higher levels of testosterone, the male sex hormone. When estrogen and testosterone levels are out of balance, men may experience breast tissue growth.
Breast development in men can occur at any age, but happens most frequently during the infant, teen, and 50+ age categories, likely due to hormonal fluctuations at these times.
Other causes of gynecomastia include:
- Poor nutrition
- Some medical conditions and diseases
- Medications including antidepressants, heart medications, anti-anxiety medications, and antibiotics
- Drug use including anabolic steroids, alcohol, marijuana, and amphetamines
- Liver or kidney disease
If you’re taking medications, talk with your doctor if you experience male breast development. Swapping your medications could fix the problem without the need for surgery.. Bring a list of all medications and supplements you use to your consultation.

There are two primary parts of the procedure for surgically treating gynecomastia: liposuction and surgical excision.
- Liposuction- In many men, fatty tissue is a primary contributor to breast development. This fatty tissue can be removed using liposuction. For a typical liposuction procedure, we make small incisions near the breast area or underneath the areola and insert a small tube called a canula. Suction is applied to remove fat cells and sculpt the area. Liposuction for men works best on patients with primarily fatty tissue in the breasts. It does not remove or tighten skin, so it is recommended only for patients with minimal to moderate breast development. Liposuction leaves minimal scarring.
- Surgical Excision– If your breast tissue is also has glandular tissue, or if you have significant breast development, Dr. Farber may also recommend excision and removal of the breast tissue. This is a process where skin, breast tissue, and fat are removed using carefully placed incisions. Wecan remove excess skin, resize the areola, reposition the nipple, etc.
Many patients will benefit from a combination of excision and liposuction. We personalize every treatment plan based on each patient’s unique needs.

Gynecomastia Surgery in Boca Raton, FL
We perform gynecomastia surgery at either our office location or one of the local hospitals in Boca Raton.
We offer both liposuction and surgical excision for male breast reduction. Dr. Farber will work with you to create a treatment plan that uses one or both of these options. We’ll talk in detail about what to expect from your surgery during your consultation.
After the surgery, we’ll wrap the chest area with bandaging and compression garments. These garments hold the skin and tissues in place while you heal. Patients return home the same day, usually a couple of hours after surgery.
Recovery After Male Breast Reduction
Recovery after gynecomastia surgery may take a few days or a few weeks, depending on the type of surgery you receive and the extent of your procedure. Most patients take about a week off from work, longer if the job requires physical duties.
Common side effects experienced during recovery from male breast reduction include tenderness, soreness, tightness, swelling, and bruising. These side effects will be most dramatic in the first few days and will decrease gradually over a week or two.
It is very important that you avoid smoking during the recovery process. Smoking can cause serious complications after plastic surgery. We ask all patients to stop smoking at least three weeks before surgery and until full recovery is achieved. Alcohol use is also not recommended.
How Long Do Results from Male Breast Reduction Last?
Patients see their improved chest contours as soon as they awake from surgery. You may be swollen, but you’ll see a flatter, more masculine chest. These results improve over the next weeks as swelling resolves.
Male breast reduction usually offers long-lasting results.
If excess male breast tissue is keeping you from fully enjoying Florida’s beautiful beaches, know that it’s very common and very treatable.
