What Is a Brazilian Butt Lift?
A Brazilian butt lift, abbreviated BBL, is a buttocks enhancement procedure. It uses fat to volumize the buttocks area. The volumizing fat comes from the patient and is harvested using liposuction techniques on the day of surgery. A BBL will improve the appearance of both the buttocks and the area where fat is removed, often the abdomen, hips, or waist.
How does it work? A Brazilian butt lift takes fat from an area with excess and relocates it to an area with a shortage, in this case the buttocks. Much of the transferred fat will integrate with the tissues in the new location for a long-lasting result. By harvesting fat from a complementary area, results appear more enhanced. Your new, smaller waist will highlight your volumized buttocks.
The name Brazilian butt lift is a bit of a misnomer. Most surgical lifts, like a body lift or breast lift, involve lifting and repositioning tissues and removing excess skin. A BBL technically doesn’t lift or tighten tissues. It volumizes the buttocks area through the addition of extra fat. A more accurate name for this procedure would be Brazilian buttocks augmentation. A BBL volumizes the buttocks, which may create a more lifted, shapely appearance, but it does not actually lift tissues.

BBL vs. Buttocks Implants
A Brazilian butt lift shapes and contours the backside without the use of implants. It uses fat, extracted from the patient themselves, to volumize and shape the buttocks. This procedure is very different from buttocks implants, although both achieve similar results.
- Buttocks Implants– Like breast implants, buttocks implants are surgically inserted into the buttocks to provide shape and volume. These implants are made from solid silicone substance and are very strong to withstand sitting forces. Buttocks implants come in many shapes and sizes.
- BBL– A Brazilian butt lift shapes and enhances the buttocks using fat. It offers a long-lasting result, without implants. Using fat instead of implants eliminates the possibility of implant complications including shifting, rupture, and capsular contracture.
Both types of buttocks enhancement have benefits. We choose to offer BBL because of its versatility and natural-looking results.
The BBL Process- What Happens in the Operating Room?
We perform BBL procedures under general anesthesia at a local area hospital. Dr. Farber will provide information about the location of your surgery and the check-in process before surgery day.
On the day of your BBL, you’ll arrive at the hospital and check-in. Before heading into the operating room, you’ll meet with Dr. Farber and the board-certified anesthesiologist that will be caring for you.
The first step in a Brazilian butt lift is extraction. Fat is removed from a pre-selected area using liposuction techniques. We use the Revolve® Fat Grafting System in our BBL procedures. This system optimizes fat harvesting while preserving the integrity of the extracted fat cells. Fat is removed from the body and directly pumped into this system for cleaning and purifying.
We typically choose to extract fat from an area that will enhance BBL results. Removing fat from the abdomen and waist creates a smaller mid-section, enhancing those hourglass curves created later through fat grafting.
The second part of a BBL involves transferring extracted fat into the buttocks. Fat is injected into the buttocks in the desired areas to improve contour and dimension the buttock. Dr. Farber is a skilled injector, meticulously injecting the fat to create a fuller, rounded buttocks appearance.
Most patients are ready to return home a few hours after their procedure. Someone will need to drive you and help care for you initially. Some patients enlist a family member or friend, but many choose to hire one of our skilled post-operative nurses for the first day or two.
Recovery After BBL
The biggest post-operative restriction is a complete lack of pressure on the buttocks. Patients cannot sit or lay on their backside temporarily. Pressure can damage the newly transferred fat cells, interfering with their ability to implant successfully. Patients use a special pillow that alleviates pressure to the area during recovery.

Brazilian Butt Lift FAQ
Ideal candidates for a Brazilian Butt Lift are those who:
- Do you desire fullness or sculpting to your buttock region
- Lead healthy, active lifestyles
- Have realistic expectations for what the procedure can offer them
Depending on the patient, most BBL procedures take an experienced surgeon somewhere in the vicinity of three to four hours. This includes administering the anesthetic, performing the procedure, and immediate post-surgery recovery before leaving the clinic.
One of the main reasons patients desire a Brazilian Butt Lift is that they want to look great in a tight pair of jeans. During the recovery process, patients need to avoid unnecessary pressure on the buttocks, as this can dislodge some of the transferred fat cells and reduce the survival rate. As such, we recommend avoiding jeans for four to six weeks after the surgery to give the fat cells adequate time to “settle” into their new location.
Keeping the buttocks pressure-free is the main goal during recovery from a BBL, which means sleeping either on one’s side, with knees tucked, or on one’s front. Patients can position pillows against their back to prevent them from rolling over onto their buttocks in their sleep.
The cost of your Brazilian butt lift in Boca Raton, FL will depend on factors such as the extent of the fat transfer, anesthesia cost, facility fees, etc. After discussing your goals and developing a personalized treatment plan for your BBL, Dr. Farber will give you a detailed breakdown of your expected costs for the procedure.
Yes. Most patients can go home a few hours after getting a Brazilian butt lift. You will need someone to drive you home and help with your recovery for the first few days after your surgery. Dr. Farber and his team also provide you with a list of aftercare instructions that help you recover at home while reducing discomfort and decreasing the risk of complications.
By default, Brazilian butt lift is combined with liposuction to eliminate unwanted fat from different areas of your body and transfer it to your buttocks for more enhanced and augmented contours. This provides you with the dual benefit of letting go of excess fat from some areas of your body while giving your buttocks a more defined shape. Due to the extent of the surgery, it is typically recommended that you wait for a few months after your BBL before getting another major body contouring surgery.
Patients can typically resume light daily activities within 5-7 days and return to work in 1-2 weeks following their BBL procedure. However, you need to avoid putting excess pressure on your buttocks for approximately 6 weeks after your surgery. You also need to steer clear of exercise for at least 6-8 weeks after your BBL. To help you breeze through this recovery phase, Dr. Farber and his team provide you with a list of post-procedure instructions that guide you through these steps to help you heal appropriately and reach ideal outcomes from your BBL.
Dr. Farber will guide you through your preparation for your Brazilian butt lift. The first step is coming to a comprehensive consultation with your questions prepared. During your consultation, Dr. Farber will answer all of your questions and tell you exactly what your process will look like, how much time you will need to take off of work, and how you can best prepare your home for recovery. You will need to go through initial assessments as well as a few lab tests to determine if the surgery is suitable for you.
In addition to arranging for someone to help you around your home for the first few days after your BBL, you need to quit smoking and consuming alcohol for a few weeks before your surgery date. If you take any medications, you should inform Dr. Farber about them as well.
Before your surgery, Dr. Farber and his team will guide you through these general steps, offer specific suggestions if required, and answer any additional questions that you may have throughout the process
The most significant activity to avoid after a Brazilian butt lift is sitting on your buttocks for more than a few minutes at a time for at least 6 weeks after the procedure because the fat cells that are transferred to your buttocks from other parts of your body require some time to settle in. If you put excessive pressure on these fat cells, they can get eliminated and deliver poorer outcomes for your BBL. To help you manage these requirements, Dr. Farber and his team guide you through best practices for BBL aftercare.
