What Is Fat Grafting?

Fat has a bad reputation, but the truth is, we all need it. It is fat that gives your face those youthful contours and your breasts their delightful shape. Without fat, the body would be gaunt, hollow, and unattractive. The problem with fat arises when you’ve got too much, or too much in the wrong places. Fat cells themselves aren’t bad, just their abundance and sometimes their placement.

Fat grafting offers some unique benefits. It is longer lasting than many dermal fillers. Using your own fat cells rather than synthetic filler is also a more natural solution to aging. Patients enjoy aesthetic improvement in two areas: the area where fat is removed and the area where it is implanted.

The Fat Grafting Process

Fat transfer is a multi-stage procedure, performed at our on-site, state-of-the-art operating suite or at a local area hospital. It begins with extraction or harvesting of fat. Dr. Farber uses liposuction techniques to remove fat from your body. He’ll work with you to choose an extraction site. We often select an area that will aesthetically benefit from contouring like the hips, buttocks, or abdomen.

After the fat is removed, it is cleaned and processed for transfer. We use several harvesting and purification systems such as the REVOLVETM Fat Grafting System to prepare fat for transfer. These  cutting-edge technologies are used in every stage of the fat grafting process, from extraction to transfer. It cleans and concentrates extracted fat and removes contaminants, ensuring that we have the highest quality fat available for transfer. This system ensures that the integrity of the fat cell is preserved throughout the grafting process. Studies have shown that this revolutionary fat processing system improves outcomes and reduces complications from fat grafting.

In the final step of this treatment, the cleaned and processed fat is placed into syringes. It is carefully injected into the face or body, providing additional volume. The injected fat will integrate into the tissues of the transfer area. We perform fat grafting on the face, breasts, and buttocks.

Facial Fat Transfer

Youthful faces are known for their full, rounded cheeks. As you get older, fat stores in the face shift. Those full cheeks lose volume, and fat may concentrate in other areas like under the chin. Less volume in the face means wrinkling, hollows, sagging, and a deflated appearance.

Facial fat transfer smooths out the wrinkles commonly associated with aging and restores a more youthful appearance. Your surgeon may inject your fat into the cheeks, lips, and/or prominent facial wrinkles. Fat grafting is often paired with other facial surgeries like a facelift.

LET’S GET STARTED

Fat Grafting for the Breasts and Body

Surgeons also use your own fat to augment your breasts or buttocks.

  • ButtocksThe Brazilian butt lift is a fat transfer procedure for the buttocks. Transferred fat into the buttocks can add volume and lift to the backside.
  • Breasts– Breast implants aren’t the only way to increase breast size. Fat grafting is ideal for filling in depressions or dimples on the breasts. It can also add slight volume. For larger size increases, we recommend saline or silicone breast implants, but for small to moderate size increases, fat transfer can be an effective treatment option. Some women call this procedure natural breast augmentation.

Recovery After Fat Grafting

Fat grafting is an outpatient procedure. You’ll return home the same day, usually a few hours after your surgery is complete. Many of our patients choose to hire one of our skilled nurses for post-surgical care and transport.

You’ll have two recovery sites after a fat transfer procedure, the extraction area and the injection area. Both areas will feel tender, swollen, and bruised. Recovery symptoms fade rapidly. Most patients feel a lot better after a couple of days and are back to many daily activities in about a week. The amount of fat removed and transferred will impact recovery timelines.

Fat is most sensitive in the first few days after the procedure. We use the state-of-the-art systems to minimize damage to fat cells during extraction and cleaning. Our patients can do their part during recovery by limiting pressure to the transfer areas. Patients receiving fat injections into the buttocks will need to be especially careful during the recovery period and should avoid pressure on the buttocks.

We’ll provide after-care instructions and are available for questions. You’ll come in for follow-up visits periodically so we can assess healing after your fat transfer procedure.

How Long Do Fat Transfer Results Last?

Fat transfer results are long-lasting. If additional volume is desired, fat transfer can be performed again.

The REVOLVE system and other state-of-theart systems Dr Farber utilizes both improves predictability from fat transfer and minimizes fat loss during recovery for many patients.

Alternatives to Fat Transfer

We realize that surgery isn’t always the right fit. If you’re not ready for surgery, but want to rejuvenate your contours, ask us about injectable fillers. Dermal fillers can achieve many of the same results of fat transfer, although temporarily. Injectable fillers are used to fill in lines and wrinkles and add volume to the face. They are also used for non-surgical lip augmentation. A filler treatment can last up 2 years depending on the type of filer used, although this timeline varies depending on the products used and the areas treated.

One benefit of fillers is a lack of downtime. After dermal filler treatment, patients can resume daily activities immediately. Fillers are a non-surgical treatment option.
