A flat, well-toned abdomen is something many of us strive for through diet and exercise. However, sometimes these methods alone cannot achieve the look we want. Many patients come in asking if liposuction or a tummy tuck is what will help them to get the flat stomach they desire.
No procedure is a “one-size fits all”. Dr. Farber explains that while both procedures are great options for a flatter stomach, there are a couple variables that will determine which one will help you achieve the results you are looking for.
If there is a noticeable amount of sagging or loose skin, often caused by major weight gain and loss or pregnancies, a tummy tuck may be the right choice. A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, involves removal of excess skin and fat as well as tightening of the abdominal wall creating an “internal corset”. The result is a more hourglass appearance and flatter abdomen.
For patients with no or very minimal skin laxity or looseness, liposuction can often achieve the results they are looking for. Liposuction involves removal of excess fat in the areas of concern such as the abdomen, love handles, back, or thighs. With good skin tone, the overlying skin will often retract around the new contour to achieve a smooth, natural-looking appearance.
After pregnancy and massive weight loss, the once tight abdominal wall may become loose, leading to a bulging appearance. During a tummy tuck, the abdominal wall is tightened creating an “internal corset” and a flatter tummy.
Liposuction primarily removes fat from below the skin surface and does not treat any underlying muscle laxity.
•Removes loose abdominal skin
•Removes excess fat from the abdomen
•Tightens the abdominal wall musculature, which both flattens the tummy from the side view as well as pulling in the waist to improve the “hour glass” shape
•Removes excess fat
