Lift vs. Reduction

Weight loss, pregnancy and breast feeding, even gravity influence the shape of our breasts. Many patients ask Dr. Farber if a breast lift or reduction will help them return their breast to a more youthful state.  While each patient will require an individual plan tailored to their body and desires Dr. Farber explains how to decipher if a breast reduction, also known as mammoplasty, or a breast lift, also known as mastopexy will be right for you.

To choose the proper type of breast surgery for you, you must first define your desired aesthetic goals. If the goal is to have a significant amount of volume and weight reduction in breast tissue, then a breast reduction procedure will likely be right for you.

If you are primarily concerned with changing your silhouette or droopiness of your breast, so that your breasts are perkier, firmer and higher—but are happy with the overall size—a breast lift might be the best procedure for you.

Whether you are looking to have a breast lift or a breast reduction, patients typically comment that they feel more confident in their own body, feel more youthful, and experience more comfort after undergoing surgery.

If you experience any of the following symptoms then a breast reduction or lift may be the treatment for you:

Are your breasts too large and out of proportion with your body frame?

Do your breasts feel heavy to you?

Are your nipples and areolae stretched, sitting below your breast crease and/or do they point downward?

Do you have difficulty maintaining correct posture?

Do you have significant skin laxity in the area of your breasts?

Are you experiencing shoulder, neck or back pain from the heavy breasts?

Is your skin often irritated under your breasts or do you have a rash between your breasts?

Do your breasts limit your daily activities?

Do your breasts limit your choice of clothing?
