When people lose a lot of weight, whether as the result of diet, exercise, or bariatric surgery, they can be left with unsightly loose skin that hangs off the body. For individuals wanting to remove overhanging skin, a procedure known as a circumferential abdominoplasty may be the solution. Similar to what is commonly known as a “tummy tuck“, a circumferential abdominoplasty is a more comprehensive procedure that removes excess fat while sculpting the body for a more pleasing and aesthetic look.
What is Circumferential Abdominoplasty?
The procedure known as circumferential abdominoplasty is a surgical intervention that trims unwanted extra skin from around the thighs, buttocks, and mid-section of the body. The procedure begins with an incision in the abdomen. Excess skin is then removed while the remaining skin is aesthetically joined together. The procedure is then repeated on the lateral side of the body with an incision made in the lower part of the back.
Benefits of Circumferential Abdominoplasty
- The removal of excess fat and skin.
- A more pleasing, toned appearance.
- The flattening of the stomach skin.
- Better posture.
- Enhanced self-confidence and self-esteem.
- Tighter abdominal muscles.
Ideal Candidates for a Circumferential Abdominoplasty
This procedure is ideal for individuals who have undergone a significant amount of weight gain that resulted in dramatic changes to their appearance. A circumferential abdominoplasty is not useful for individuals who just have loose skin around their stomach or other areas of their abdomen.
Ideal candidates are:
- People who have a large amount of excess fat and skin around the thighs, belly, and thighs, i.e. areas that are hard to tone.
- People who do not smoke. Smoking can lead to complications as well as the limiting the body’s ability to heal from the procedure.
- People who are in generally good health or who only have minor, controllable medical issues.

The Circumferential Abdominoplasty Procedure
The surgery is performed under general anesthesia with careful monitoring and application by a certified anesthetist. Once the patient is anesthetized, Dr. Farber will perform an incision around the circumference of the patient’s waist. Liposuction is then used to remove excess fat and to contour the body from the upper part of the chest to the upper part of the legs. Dr. Farber will then tighten the patient’s abdominal muscles and may also reposition the belly button to give the stomach a more pleasing appearance. The final step of the procedure is to remove all excess skin and then tighten the skin with sutures.
The average circumferential abdominoplasty lasts between two and five hours. Following the procedure, patients will be required to spend three to four days recovering at a surgical recovery center.
Circumferential Abdominoplasty Recovery
Compared to other similar procedures such as a tummy tuck, there is a significant amount of recovery that follows a circumferential abdominoplasty surgery:
- Patients are advised to avoid all vigorous activity for a minimum of two months following the surgery.
- Dr. Farber will prescribe an appropriate medication to help deal with any discomfort following the procedure. Most discomfort subsides after about two weeks following the surgery.
- There will be a marked amount of swelling and tenderness in the area. Swelling usually is worse three days after the surgery but will subside nearly entirely within a month. It takes about six months for all tenderness in the area to dissipate.
